Santarini and Mykonos are struggling with a massive influx of tourists, so you should pay attention to the “hidden pearls” of Greece.
Travelers often choose among the Greek holiday destinations of Santarini and Mykonos, but these iconic islands have recently been struggling with a massive influx of tourists. Sunsail manager and travel expert Claire Shields told the Daily Express what six “hidden gems” you can visit in Greece to get a satisfying vacation experience.
1. Lefkada
This island offers visitors to relax on stunning beaches such as Porto Caciki and Egremni. Also, tourists can visit mountain villages and enjoy unsurpassed sunset views without having to jostle in queues.
“This is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. You get natural beauty without chaos, ” Shields explained.
Easy access to Lefkada and its proximity to smaller islands also make it an ideal base for traveling to other destinations. And Greek cuisine, based on fresh local products, adds to its charm.
2. Meganisi
This island can be reached in a few minutes by boat from Lefkada. Meganisi is known for its sea caves, coves and unspoilt nature.
“There is a real atmosphere of old Greece here. It’s authentic, quiet, and the food is incredible, ” the expert explained.
She recommended visiting the Papanikolis Cave, which once served as a shelter for submarines during the Second World War.
3. Paxos
This island is commonly called the “paradise for artists”. Tourists here can enjoy the crystal clear water and the hospitality of the locals.
“Nothing happens fast on Paxos, and that’s the whole point. You will feel that time has stopped, ” said Shields.
4. Kastos and Kalamos
These two tiny islands near Lefkada are also suitable for travelers looking for a relaxing holiday. They are famous for their pine forests. Kastos, with less than 100 inhabitants, is like a floating village.
“There are no resorts here, just small harbors, traditional taverns and clear, calm waters. It is ideal for a measured rest, ” the expert said.
5. Atokos
The uninhabited island, which can only be reached by boat, is quite wild and serene. There you can meet free-roaming wild pigs and get as close to the wild as possible.
6. Ayia Effimia, Kefalonia
This fishing village on the eastern coast of Kefalonia is ideal for a relaxing holiday. For those looking for adventure, the expert recommends visiting nearby caves such as Melissani and Drogarati, where you can enjoy the eerie beauty and glowing blue lakes.
