While March can still be quite cold, there are plenty of warm and sunny destinations in southern Europe where you can warm up.
Meanwhile, experienced travelers often choose the first month of spring for their trips, as this is when you can still find sunny European resorts at reasonable prices, while making the most of the cool weather to plan larger excursions.

Catania, Italy

Although the famous Etna volcano in Sicily can be covered in snow even in March, the temperature in one of the most beautiful cities on the island, Catania, is already quite comfortable for walking through its stunning baroque streets.
The moderate temperature and sunny weather are perfect for long walks, allowing you to see more than in the middle of summer, including the Church of Sant’Agata and the Cathedral of Santa Agata, as well as the gardens, monasteries, and flea markets that the city offers. Another must-visit is the famous fish market, La Pescheria, located near Piazza Duomo.
Almeria, Spain

The Andalusian capital boasts more than 200 kilometers of wild beaches. Almeria is famous for its desert landscapes, which can be seen in Indiana Jones movies and popular TV series like Doctor Who and Game of Thrones.
History and architecture enthusiasts can explore the ancient Alcazaba fortress, the 1524 city cathedral, Arabic wells, and surviving shelters from the Spanish Civil War.
Meanwhile, the comfortable temperature of +15-20°C creates excellent conditions for hiking in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.
Porto, Portugal

As Lisbon’s popularity among tourists reaches new heights, Porto offers a more laid-back experience, especially for those visiting in March. While it may not be the perfect summer weather for a vacation, with the blooming magnolias and the sun reflecting off the colorful azulejos, March provides visitors with the opportunity to explore this small, hilly city on foot, indulging in long lunches, wine tastings, and walks along the Douro River.
If you visit the city in early March, you can also attend the final part of the Porto International Film Festival, which will take place from February 27 to March 8. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll through the famous street markets of Porto Belo (every Saturday at Carlos Alberto Square), Mercado da Alegria (on Sundays in Jardim do Passeio Alegre), and the slightly more touristy Ribeira Market, where you can find a variety of ceramics, engravings, jewelry, and delicacies to take home.
Crete, Greece

The unique combination of historical monuments, picturesque natural sites, and spacious beaches in Crete can be experienced in March, when the temperature is comfortable and there are fewer tourists than during the high season.
During the month, visitors to the island can enjoy six hours of glorious sunshine, with only eight rainy days. Elounda, Chania, and Rethymno are the warmest areas of the island, while Sissi is slightly cooler at +14°C.
The capital of Crete, Heraklion, is full of historic architecture, but don’t overlook the vibrant port city of Chania, which has Venetian, Egyptian, and Ottoman influences in its architecture and dates back to the 14th century. Nearby attractions include the Elafonisi Nature Reserve with its naturally pink beaches and the serene Lake Kournas.
