The flight attendant explained the foods and drinks that passengers should avoid during their flight.
Flight attendant Selina Bedding made a radical call to passengers, advising them to “avoid food on the plane” if possible, due to its high salt and sugar content, which compensates for the dulled taste buds at high altitudes.
She explained: “Due to the pressure in the cabin, we lose about 30% of our taste buds. Therefore, companies that prepare food for airlines add much more salt to ensure that it tastes good at an altitude of 12 kilometers.”
As Express reports, despite the popularity of toast and ham and cheese sandwiches during flights, Selina recommended choosing healthier meal options such as salads. “You can choose a salad or fruit salad. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to stay hydrated,” she said.
The flight attendant also strongly advised travelers to never drink tap water on a plane.
“To all passengers… NEVER drink tap water from the airplane toilet,” she emphasized.
She pointed out that numerous studies have confirmed that tap water on airplanes is not suitable for drinking. While some may dismiss this as a ploy to increase beverage sales, Selina insists that it is a genuine health precaution.
The best drink for flight attendants on a plane is nothing less than tomato juice, and it’s not just a strange preference – there’s science behind it.
It turns out that this juice is also the most popular among passengers, according to a study conducted by Lufthansa.
As the publication explained, the fact is that flying at high altitudes changes the taste receptors due to low pressure and dry conditions, affecting how flavors are perceived. Tomato juice contains umami, a savory flavor that remains consistent at high altitudes, ensuring that it retains its taste.
