Trogir attractions

All the main sights of Trogir in Croatia are concentrated in the old part of the city, which is where travelers from all over the world come.

St. Lawrence Cathedral

The church is located on John Paul II Square and seems to dominate the city. Previously, a church was located on the site of the cathedral, which was destroyed in the 12th century. Later, in 1193, the construction of a new church was started, which was completed several decades later.

St. Lawrence Cathedral

The modern version of the church is a structure with three naves in Romanesque style, the architectural ensemble is complemented by a bell tower in the Gothic style.

It is important! A distinctive feature of the cathedral is the Romanesque portal, built in the middle of the 13th century. This is the most valuable piece of local art.

Portal of St. Lawrence Cathedral

The portal is decorated with scenes on the Biblical theme, there is an image of plants and animals. Artists also came up with symbolic images for each month of the year, for example, December is a hunter who fights with a boar, and February is a girl with a fish. On both sides of the portal there are sculptures of Adam and Eve, they were depicted on the backs of predators-a lion and a lioness.

Interior design of the temple

The chapel also deserves close attention, it was built in the period from 1468 to 1472. Inside there are 12 sculptures of the apostles and a sarcophagus with the remains of the first bishop of Trogir in Croatia – St. John.

The interior design of the church is quite simple – the pulpit, built in the 13th century, is made of stone and covered with sculptures. The seats are wooden, and the altar is decorated with paintings.

Bell tower of the church

Undoubtedly, the main decoration of the temple is the bell tower with a height of 47 meters, it was rebuilt twice-in the 15th and 16th centuries. The window openings are decorated with carvings. After climbing the bell tower, tourists find themselves on the observation deck, which offers an amazing view of the whole of Trogir.

Visiting hours:

  • from November to April – from 8-00 to 12-00;
  • from April to May – from 8-00 to 18-00 on weekdays and from 12-00 to 18-00 on weekends;

Bell tower of St. Michael’s Church

If you don’t visit this Trogir attraction, the trip will be incomplete. The bell tower’s observation deck offers amazing views of the white walls and tiled roofs. You can also see the azure sea, the island of Ciovo.

View from the bell tower

There is a bell tower opposite the Church of St. Lawrence. From the outside, the attraction looks very picturesque, tourists are attracted by the Italian architecture that dominates this part of Croatia. The blue dial on the white walls is a symbol of Trogir. The tower dominates the city in Croatia, so it is here that one of the best viewing platforms is built, from where you can see not only the resort, but also the sea, green hills, mountains in the distance.

Useful to know! The staircase that leads to the observation deck is very steep, and it is quite difficult to climb. In addition, the steps are narrow, in some places even two people can hardly miss each other, but the view from above is worth the effort.

Camerlengo Fortress

Several defensive structures have been built in the city, each one is a real open-air museum, but the main attraction of Trogir is considered to be the construction of the Camerlengo. Enemy troops from Venice repeatedly tried to capture the city, when they succeeded, they built a fortress here, which became the greatest defensive structure in Europe. The fortress was able to withstand the longest siege, so the Italians were able to stay in Trogir for a long time.

Camerlengo Fortress

Interesting fact! You can enter the territory of the fortress only by crossing the bridge over the moat.

Inner courtyard

The attraction has a completely unique atmosphere, which can be felt walking around the courtyard, and looking at the ancient coats of arms of Venetian noble families. Historical film scenes are often shot on the territory of the fortress, and in the warm season festivals and various cultural events are held here.

You can visit the fortress every day from 9-00 to 19-00, in summer the walls of the structure are open until late at night.

Beaches

In addition to sightseeing, guests of Trogir can relax on the beaches of the Croatian city and its surroundings. Let’s look at the places where this can be done.

City beach of Trogir (Gradska Plaža Trogir)

The beach is located within Trogir between the Old Town and the New Ciovo Bridge. Its length is about 100 meters, covered with very small light pebbles, when entering the water in some areas there are large stones. The beach is suitable for children, as there are no large waves and the sea approach is smooth, the water is clear. In general, the place is unremarkable, there is a road nearby, but if your goal is just to refresh yourself in the sea, then this Trogir beach may well satisfy this request. The” trick ” here is a swing in the water, where you can take beautiful photos.

Paid parking is available nearby, but cars can also be parked free of charge near the church. In Gradska Plaža itself, there are 2 cafe-bars with reasonable prices, where you can both eat and order drinks.

Chiova Island

It is located 3 km from Trogir. 2 km long Copacabana beach is considered the best on the Trogir Riviera. Its carefree and fun atmosphere is reminiscent of Brazilian beaches. There are excellent conditions for recreation, you can rent the necessary equipment for water sports.

Kava Beach is located in the eastern part of the island. This is a deserted place, the water here is clean and clear, and pine trees grow on the shore. The resort is 12 km away and can be reached by car or bicycle.

A great place to relax is Krknjasi Bay. This is a special place in Croatia, where you managed to preserve the untouched nature – a real tropical paradise. The bay is rightfully included in the list of the most beautiful places in the Adriatic Sea.

Medena Beach, Chiova Island
Medena Beach

Not far from the town of Seget is Medena beach with a length of 3 km, the coast is covered with pine trees, excellent conditions for families with children are created. In the evening, you can take a walk along the embankment, have a snack in the restaurant or bar. A ferry runs from Trogir to the beach.

In the southern part of Ciova, in the small bay of Mavarstika, there is a white sand beach-a white beach that is famous for its crystal clear water.

Pantan (Plaža Pantan)

Pantan Beach

A few kilometers from the center of Trogir in the direction of Split is Pantan Beach. Pine trees on the beach provide a pleasant shade, and you can eat in a cafe or restaurant. The sea here is shallow and warm, the beach is covered with small pebbles. At this point, the river flows into the sea, and the water can not be called perfectly clear, rather it is even muddy.

It is more convenient to get there by car or bike, but you can also take a walk. Please note that there are no amenities on this beach.
