Active winter holidays bring us not only entertainment but also clear health benefits. Therefore, the main task of a tourist is to find a budget alternative to the European Alps. One such option could be the ski resorts of Turkey. The nature of the terrain in this country is predominantly mountainous.
The height of the Anatolian Plateau, which occupies almost the entire peninsula of Asia Minor, in some places reaches 2,000 meters. Along the southern coast stretch the beautiful Taurus Mountains, with peaks rising almost 3,000 meters into the sky. In the east of the country are scattered cones of extinct volcanoes.
In the cold months, from November to April, the mountainous terrain is covered with a three-meter snow cap. However, like other European winter resorts, Turkey opens its ski season later, in December, and closes it in March. During this period, the snow cover is more stable, making skiing on mountain slopes safer.
Uludağ

Uludağ is considered one of Turkey’s popular winter resorts. Like all ski slopes, it is located away from major cities. After flying to Istanbul, tourists will need to travel another 180 km by land transport.
Therefore, booking a transfer to the hotel is the optimal solution. However, you can make this journey independently. You can either fly to Bursa with local airlines or travel by bus in 4 hours. From Bursa to the resort itself, it is 35 km. It is simpler and cheaper to use a taxi.
In Turkish, the name Uludağ translates to “huge mountain,” which may not fully meet the expectations of a seasoned tourist. The mountain height is about 2,300 meters, but there are no steep and sheer walls. The 17 km of ski slopes are located on a relatively gentle slope of the mountain and surrounded by coniferous forest. This guarantees that vacationers will get not only sports but also aesthetic pleasure from skiing.
The duration of the skiing season is very dependent on weather conditions; thus, it is best to plan from the last decade of December to the end of March. The slopes of Uludağ are suitable for both experienced and beginner snowboarders and skiers. There are mainly “green” (10) and “blue” (8) slopes for beginners, 6 “red” slopes for intermediate skiers, and only one “black” slope located outside the forest area.
When choosing a hotel for a vacation in Uludağ, note that there are almost no small villas and apartments, only hotels. Moreover, there are no very cheap hotels. Tourists can expect budget places, mid-priced places, and expensive rooms. Hotels located near the slopes have their own lifts.
All guests can use these lifts as the service is included in the accommodation cost. If tourists stay far from the ski base, they will have to use the lifts of neighboring hotels, for an additional fee.
Some tourists prefer to stay in Bursa during the season and only travel to the slopes to ski. This option significantly saves the trip budget but requires more effort to move to the slopes.
Palandöken

In Palandöken, tourists can expect not only Turkish hospitality but also beautiful landscapes, modern resort infrastructure, and well-equipped ski slopes catering to athletes of various skill levels.
The youngest of Turkey’s ski resorts is located in the northeast, 4 km from the ancient city of Erzurum. It is accessible only by local airlines from Istanbul, Antalya, or Ankara. Hotels offer airport transfers for guests purchasing a package tour. Independent travelers typically reach the hotels by bus (public transport in Turkey is of a decent level) or taxi.
As in all Turkish resorts, the most stable snow in Palandöken is from mid-December to March, with snow thickness reaching 2 meters in winter. The mountain slopes feature various difficulty levels of slopes, totaling 30 km. Experienced instructors (including Russian-speaking ones) offer step-by-step training for beginners, conducted in specially designated “corridors” away from general skiing.
Extreme sports enthusiasts and freeriders will be attracted by the “black” slopes with untracked, untouched surface slopes. The ski slopes of Palandöken are laid between heights of 2,200 m to 3,175 m. The ascent to the start is provided by 4 chairlifts and 3 drag lifts. The cost of the lift for hotel guests is included in the accommodation cost.
In addition to standard resort entertainment, guests in Palandöken are offered excursions to nearby cities Erzurum and Trabzon, where history has preserved many attractions.
Kartalkaya

The small town of Kartalkaya is located in the western part of Turkey’s Black Sea region. It can be reached either from Istanbul (6 hours) or from Ankara (4 hours) by scheduled buses. The name Kartalkaya includes two ski resorts – Kartal and Doruk. Both offer excellent slopes for skiers and snowboarders.
With about 40 km of slopes, the resort leads in length. The landscapes of the Keroglu National Park allowed organizers to create many intricate routes for ski races. Here, with the participation of Austrian engineers, Turkey’s only “Snowpark” and a children’s ski center have been created. All slopes occupy a height corridor from 1,800 m to 2,300 m and are equipped with 11 lifts (6 drag lifts, 2 chairlifts, and 3 special lifts for children). The total capacity of the lifts is up to 6,000 people per hour.
In terms of slope difficulty, the resort is very democratic. There are two “black” and two “blue” slopes, and most are “red” (6) and “green” (5).
Accommodation options at the resort are not very varied. The slope is divided between two major hotels (5 and 4). They are not cheap, but both operate on an “all-inclusive” basis. Many tourists prefer to stay in Bolu (54 km from the slope), where rooms and equipment are cheaper. In their free time from skiing, tourists are offered excursions to the nearby town of Bolu, the neighboring Yedigoller National Park, and trips to the Kaplicalari hot spring.
Sarıkamış

For the quality of snow, the resort town of Sarıkamış has been nicknamed the Turkish Innsbruck. It is located in the province of Kars in the northeastern region of the country, at an altitude of 2,700 meters. Sunny weather and virtually no wind in this region allow the snow cover to last about five months.
The most convenient way to reach this remote area is by flying with local airlines to Kars from Istanbul or Ankara. Further transfers from Kars to the resort (54 km) are provided by all hotels and are usually included in the tour price. The resort offers tourists skiing down the slopes of Mount Cibiltepe on 9 trails of varying difficulty.
There are 3 “black” runs listed, but by difficulty criteria, they clearly fall short of the Alpine ones. Mostly, there are gentle slopes for recreational skiers and beginners. A separate 200-meter corridor is set up for snowboarders, and cross-country skiing enthusiasts have a 50-kilometer “Cross-Country” ski track.
Three lifts take athletes to the start of the trails. The ski pass purchase service is already included in the accommodation cost for hotel guests, but additional charges apply for visitors.
Compared to other resorts, Sarıkamış occupies a much smaller area. The total length of prepared trails is just over 16 kilometers. The only place for excursions or shopping is Kars. Additional entertainment options are limited. When planning a trip to Sarıkamış, you need to determine exactly how many days you can dedicate solely to sports.
Erciyes

In the southeastern part of the Anatolian plateau lies the modern ski center with developed infrastructure – Erciyes. The small tourist town is spread out on the slopes of the eponymous peak (3,916 m). The summit of Erciyes is an extinct volcano. The optimal depth of the snow cover guarantees thrilling skiing on various trails for active recreation enthusiasts. Excellent conditions for winter vacations are provided here.
Guests have access to hotels of various star categories, restaurants, shops, sports equipment rental points, and wellness centers. Tourists can reach Erciyes by bus from Kayseri Airport. The distance between the cities is about 30 kilometers. The lower station of the chairlifts and eight-seater gondolas is located at an altitude of 2,200 meters. Visitors can ascend to 3,400 meters.
The lack of dense vegetation ensures excellent visibility of the surrounding landscapes. The length of the trails exceeds 40 kilometers. Experienced skiers prefer fast red and black runs with winding turns. Wide and gentle sections are intended for beginners. In Erciyes, you can also engage in rock climbing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding.
Saklıkent

This unique village offers guests the opportunity to switch from sunny sandy beaches to snow-covered slopes of the Bakırlıdağ mountain range. It is located 50 kilometers from Antalya at an altitude of 2,500 meters. The magic of a winter wonderland here lasts from December to April. During this period, a sufficient amount of stable snowfall provides safe and comfortable skiing on well-organized trails.
Boarding houses and private villas offer guests comfortable accommodations. Bars, cafes, and ski schools are available for vacationers. The hotels have children’s rooms, pools, and gyms. Saklıkent is ideal for both professional athletes and those planning to ski or snowboard for the first time.
The skiing area consists of blue, red, and black routes with gentle and steep slopes. The trails are equipped with two funiculars with a total capacity of about 1,200 people per hour.
Kartepe

The rapidly developing high-altitude town of Kartepe covers an area of 3,500 square kilometers. This largest Turkish ski center is nestled among picturesque forests and majestic mountain ranges at an altitude of 1,950 meters. The slopes offer breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Sapanca and the Gulf of Kocaeli. Kartepe consists of luxurious hotel complexes and wellness entertainment facilities.
To reach the resort town, travelers should use a taxi or car rental service, as there is no public transport to Kartepe. The nearest international airport is in Istanbul (115 km). A variety of snow-covered routes will satisfy both experienced and novice athletes. Twelve ski trails are organized for winter sports enthusiasts, with a total length of 48 kilometers.
Depending on their skill level, tourists can choose easy gentle green and wide blue sections or winding red and fast black runs. Kartepe offers a wide range of entertainment. Positive energy can be gained from sledding, snowmobiling, swimming in a pool with healing algae, taking mud baths in a spa salon, and mountaineering.
Zigana

At the foot of the Zigana peak lies the small namesake village, included in the list of attractive Turkish places. A pine valley, snow-covered slopes, and pristine air create an ideal relaxing atmosphere. The relatively young town, established in 2006, has limited infrastructure. It features a hotel complex consisting of one multi-story building and several cottage houses.
The hotel has a restaurant, cafe, and sports equipment rental point. The best way to reach the Zigana ski center is by public transport from Trabzon Airport (60 km). Zigana offers its guests the opportunity to enjoy skiing at altitudes of 1,900-2,500 meters. Two trails are serviced by a modern network of chairlifts.
Wide, gentle, and well-groomed slopes are suitable for beginner skiers. Speed and extreme trail enthusiasts may find it boring here. Adults and children can enjoy sledding, snowmobiling, or snowboarding. A pleasant impression is left by a walk through the snowy forest massif.
Davraz

The high-altitude town of Davraz welcomes lovers of active winter sports. It occupies the northern slopes of the namesake mountain range, reaching 2,635 meters high. Picturesque nature, stable snow cover, and top-notch infrastructure are the reasons why Davraz is becoming one of Turkey’s popular resort destinations.
The town is surrounded by three lakes with crystal-clear emerald waters, attracting nature lovers. The cozy corner is a 1.5-hour drive by bus from Antalya Airport. Hotel complexes operating on an “all-inclusive” basis are available to tourists.
Swimming pools, gyms, sports grounds, spa salons, entertainment venues, and restaurants can brighten the busy days of vacationers. Well-equipped trails are laid at heights from 1,500 to 2,500 meters. They are divided into green, blue, red, and black sections, corresponding to the skill level of skiers. The slopes are serviced by chairlifts and drag lifts.
Predominantly, the slopes are of medium difficulty. Extreme speed skiing enthusiasts will appreciate two routes with height differences of over 500 meters. Diverse entertainment is provided for guests. In addition to skiing, you can enjoy sledding, tubing, and snowmobiling.
Bitlis

In the Taurus Mountains area lies the cozy small ski center of Bitlis. The unique natural landscape is formed by the merging riverbeds of the Hüsrev and Avehu. The winter season, lasting from December to April, delights tourists with abundant snowfall. The dense forest fills the area with a fresh pine aroma.
Numerous boarding houses and recreation centers provide guests with comfortable apartments. Besides hotels, visitors can enjoy cafes, restaurants, and shops. The town’s territory consists of several areas, each offering an acceptable level of service and well-maintained trails. Athletes of different skill levels will find the perfect slope for themselves.
Skiers have access to both challenging steep slopes and simple gentle sections. To reach Bitlis, you need to fly from Istanbul to Van. Regular buses run to the ski center, with the journey taking about 3 hours.
In summary, Turkey’s ski resorts offer a budget-friendly alternative to European destinations, with excellent facilities, diverse slopes, and a variety of accommodation options. From the picturesque Uludağ to the high-altitude Davraz, each resort provides a unique experience for winter sports enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced skier, Turkey’s ski resorts have something to offer, making them an attractive option for winter vacations.
