Among our holiday lovers in Montenegro, there is an opinion that the best beaches in this country are located in Budva, Ulcinj, Becici and other popular places. But today we will get acquainted with the peculiarities of recreation in the Montenegrin city of Tivat, whose beaches, unlike visiting tourists, are preferred by local residents.
There are several reasons for this – it is cheaper here, there are fewer tourists, the water is warmer than, for example, in the same Budva, and the city is green and clean.
Tivat is the youngest resort in Montenegro. And it is also here that the most chic port on the Adriatic for super-expensive yachts is located.
Indeed, most of the beaches of Tivat are concrete structures with arranged descents to the sea, or consisting of small pebbles, natural or bulk. There are also wonderful sandy beaches, although there are not so many of them. Nevertheless, 3 of the 14 Montenegrin beaches marked with the “Blue Flag”are the beaches of Tivat. But the “concrete” nature of the beaches of Tivat is compensated by the greenery of the parks that frame them and the coniferous smell of cypresses and pines.
Overview of the beaches of Tivat in Montenegro we will start from the city center, and then we will move to the outskirts along the bay alternately in both directions.
Central beach/Gradska plaža Tivat
The necessary infrastructure on the central city beach of Tivat is available: changing room and shower, toilet, rental of umbrellas and sun loungers. But the pleasure of swimming itself is not much here, although the water is clear. First, the beach itself is part of a concreted high embankment with metal stairs and steps going down to the water. Some parts of the beach, which is about 150 m long, are covered with small pebbles or sand.

The entrance to the water here is gentle, but sunbathers and bathers are under the close attention of visitors to the numerous cafes that are located on top along the entire beach platform-the embankment. During the peak season, there are a lot of people here, but vacationers with children choose other beaches.
How to get there
The beach is located next to the botanical garden, you can reach it on foot, and by car you can drive up from the Kaliman harbor. Parking, as well as the entrance to the beach, is free, but there are always few places in the parking lot.
“Palma “/Plaža Palma
A small beach (only 70 m) is located near the hotel of the same name and not far from the Central City Beach, It is always crowded, and at the height of the season, vacationers take their seats in the morning. Although admission is free, preference for a large influx is given to hotel guests, for them there are sun beds and umbrellas. Part of the shore, as on the Central Beach, is concreted, and part is covered with small pebbles.

There is no rental of equipment for “visitors”, tourists sunbathe on what they bring with them. Lifeguards work on the beach. There is a nice cafe in the building where you can have lunch and hide from the heat.
Zupa/Plaža Župa
This half-kilometer beach is an island of peace and beautiful nature at the southern entrance to the city, close to the airport. It is also part of the cypress grove and the former Bizanti Palace Park. This allows vacationers to sit in the shade of the seaside needles and often do without umbrellas. From the elevation of the palace park, you can see the neighboring islands, the mountains of the Boko Kotor Bay and enjoy a panoramic view of Tivat from an unusual angle.

More or less equipped with 100 meters of beach area-here on the shore is filled with large pebbles. The rest of the bank that runs around the perimeter of the park is rocky, and the entrance to the water is difficult. Beach infrastructure in the usual sense is now absent – there are few sun loungers and umbrellas, vacationers are located on their towels. There is also a small bar. Until recently, there was an opportunity to practice wakeboarding on Zhup, but for technical and financial reasons, the Wake Park has been closed since 2017.
Župa beach in Tivat in Montenegro is sparsely populated, vacationers with children almost do not visit it due to the lack of developed infrastructure. Lovers of boat trips and catamarans flock here, and owners of small yachts come here – those who like to swim at great depths, far from crowds of people and in the midst of picturesque nature. Swimming in the bay, you can see in detail the airliners rising into the sky or landing.

How to get there
- by bus (ost. Jadranska magistrala)
- walking distance: from the center of Tivat along the embankment takes 20-25 minutes

According to the reviews of tourists who have visited here, Selyanovo is the sunniest (but also the windiest) beach of Tivat in Montenegro, with the clearest water-thanks to the currents. There are beautiful sunsets here. There is a playground, but the beach is not exactly for small children, you can simultaneously get burned and catch a cold, there is always a light breeze blowing on the cape. There is also no entertainment like banana riding and jet skiing.

And according to visitors ‘ reviews, it is better to swim to the right of the lighthouse, where there are fewer sea urchins. It is advisable to always take special bathing slippers with you.

The 150-meter coastline of Tivat’s Waikiki Beach offers panoramic (1800 m) views of the bay and mountains, and hosts holiday parties, conferences and other events. In this place, local and Tivat residents have a rest. But for everyday beach holidays in Tivat, our tourists do not recommend it: according to reviews, it can be noisy on the shore due to the proximity of the ferry crossing, as well as due to the high activity of water entertainment lovers on this segment. Although it is from here that there are excellent views of passing cruise liners.
