You can go hiking there at two o’clock in the morning.
More and more people are choosing “cold vacations” for their holidays, and the Lofoten Islands in Norway are the perfect place for this. This is reported by Daily Express.
It is noted that if tourists decide to visit Norway from May to August, they will be able to enjoy the midnight sun, a rare opportunity to explore the country around the clock, as the sun never sets during this period.
Interestingly, the Lofoten Islands offer a completely different kind of vacation. This rugged archipelago boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world, as well as charming fishing villages that are worth exploring, and a rich cultural history that can be immersed in.
Chris Kearney, adventure creator and senior development manager at Much Better Adventures, recently went to the islands to see it for himself. The trip was so fantastic that it was hard for him to pick a single favorite moment among camping, kayaking, and exploration. He said:
“My week in the Arctic, with no sunsets, was the most surreal experience, not a specific moment. When you don’t see darkness for so long, it takes on an otherworldly quality.”
It is important that he remembers one particular event.
“We camped on an island in the Lofoten Islands, with clouds swirling over the peaks of the Valberg Mountains and the silhouette of Festvåginden in the distance, with eagles soaring overhead and a beautiful, peaceful bay surrounding us. The midnight sun made this summer vacation much more relaxing,” Kearney shared.
According to him, time on this trip “flowed much more smoothly.”
“It completely changed our way of life. If desired, you could go hiking literally at two o’clock in the morning. The days often started slower, as there was no need to rush to make the most of the short daylight hours, so you could relax in the camp or take a dip in the cool water before breakfast, ” the traveler noted.
The fastest way to get to the Lofoten Islands is by plane: you need to fly to Oslo, then change to a domestic flight to Bodø, and then take another flight to the archipelago.
The islands can also be reached by sea. Hurtigruten, also known as Norwegian Coastal Express, is a Norwegian cruise, ferry, and cargo company that operates along the Norwegian coast. The ship arrives in the Lofoten Islands at Stamsund on its way north from Bodø, and then continues to Svolver. The route follows the same route in reverse if traveling south.
