The Underwater Waterfall, Mauritius, is a rare geological formation that formed off the coast of the Le Morne Brabant Peninsula. As one of the most amazing natural sites, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. Today, it is the most famous symbol of the resort, attracting a large number of tourists every year. Those who do not have the opportunity to visit it can use the Google Maps service.
Features of the object
The “Underwater Waterfall” of Mauritius Island is located 40 km from the capital city of Port Louis (southwestern part). Despite its name, it has nothing to do with the conventional concept. However, it is impossible to describe it in any other way.
Looking at the photos of the “underwater waterfall” in Mauritius, it’s hard to believe that it’s nothing more than an optical illusion. According to numerous studies by geologists, the main reason for its appearance is the unique topography formed by coral reefs, sand deposits, and silt layers. Additionally, strong currents are observed in this area. These currents constantly move the sediment along the ocean floor, creating intricate whirls, jets, and cascades.

The presence of a depression enhances the effect. While the depth near Le Morne Brabant does not exceed 30-40 meters, it abruptly increases to 150 meters here. This creates a contrasting transition from the shallow, light-colored waters to the darker depths, giving the impression that the currents are literally falling to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
The water, which shimmers in shades of green, white, and blue, is equally captivating. Interestingly, the color of the water changes depending on the time of day. In the early hours of the morning, the waterfall takes on a shade of turquoise and green malachite. However, during the day, when the sun’s rays illuminate the ocean, the dominant color becomes ultramarine.
How can I see this legendary landmark?
The “Underwater Waterfall” in Mauritius in the Indian Ocean can only be seen from a great height. There are two ways to see it.
Method 1. From the top of the mountain to Le Morne Brabant
To get to the peninsula, use Highway 89, which runs along the coastline. You can rent a car at the airport terminal. The mountain is 556 meters high, and the trail at the top is 3.5 kilometers long. It will take at least 2 hours to hike this distance at a leisurely pace. You will need comfortable shoes and clothing, as well as drinking water, for the climb. There are no shops along the route, but you can see many monuments and ancient structures.

At the foot of the mountain, there are signs that mark the beginning of the hiking trail. The trail is 3 kilometers long and consists of two parts. The first part is relatively easy, but the second part becomes more challenging. We do not recommend taking children on this trail, as it may be too strenuous for them.
The advantage of this method is its affordable cost, but the disadvantage is that only a part of the phenomenon can be seen from the top of Le Morne Brabant, and only from one angle.
Method 2. Air tour
To get a good view of this unique phenomenon, you should book a private tour on a hydro-helicopter. The cost of such a tour ranges from 100 to 1,700 €. There are two types of tours available: 15-, 25-, 45- and 60-minute tours.

In some cases, you will only be able to see the main attraction of the island, while in others, you will also be able to explore other natural sites (the extinct volcano True-o-Serv, the Land of Seven Colors, the student town of Rose Hill, the Tamarin Cascade, the Grand Basin Lake, etc.).

Helicopters take off from special platforms located on nearby beaches and near hotels. Les Pavillons, Indian Resort & Spa, Merville Beach, Dinarobin Hotel Golf & Spa, Trou aux Biches, and Royal Palm Beachcombe are all located in the immediate vicinity of this area. The prices for accommodation are quite affordable, and each hotel has a tour desk where guests can book an aerial tour.
There are also flights from the airport.
Most air tour companies allow pregnant women (after consulting with a doctor) and young children (from 2 years old or without restrictions, with the written consent of their parents) to fly. The pilot acts as the tour guide. They will show you all the sights and answer any questions you may have.
The maximum passenger capacity of a hydro helicopter is 6 people. When filling out the application, you must provide your passport information and the exact weight of each participant. There is also a DUO service, which allows two people to fly side by side in two vessels, communicating with each other via a radio.
Passengers of planes to this and neighboring resorts (for example, Reunion) will also be able to see the waterfall in Mauritius. The main thing is that the arrival was planned for daylight hours, and the weather was clear.
