The second “Switzerland”: named the safest country in Latin America, it is underestimated

If you have already decided to visit South America, you should pay attention to this small country.

The safety factor is always the first priority when planning a trip abroad. Yemen or Afghanistan may have a lot to offer tourists, but they are not the safest countries to visit right now. However, there are still many interesting and underappreciated destinations around the world that are safe to explore.

As Travel off Path writes, Latin America is associated in the minds of most people with abnormal levels of street crime, as well as military and socialist dictatorships of various levels of inadequacy. But this part of the world also has its own “Switzerland”.

According to a new report by Global Citizen Solutions, the safest country in Latin America is the small nation of Uruguay, nestled in a triangle between Brazil, Argentina, and the warm waters of the South Atlantic.

It is estimated that the murder rate in Uruguay is about 8 per 100,000 inhabitants (an extremely low figure for the region), and the level of political stability is “high”. In other words, tourists can expect minimal disturbances on the spot. And while pickpocketing can still happen in busy areas, in general Uruguay is safe for travelers.

What to do in Uruguay

Most foreign tourists visit Uruguay’s two more famous neighbors. But this small country also has its charms. The three most noteworthy cities are Montevideo (the capital), Punta del Este and Colonia del Sacramento.

Montevideo is often referred to as the mini-Buenos Aires. The city is known for its beautiful colonial-era architecture, covered markets, and vibrant social scene. Tourists should explore the Rambla promenade along the Río de la Plata, visit the historic center with its Independence Square, stop by the Mercado del Puerto market to sample the local asado (a popular dish of grilled or open-fire meat), and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the city’s numerous parks and beaches.

Punta del Este is the main beach resort in Uruguay. Therefore, the main activities here are relaxing on the beaches of Brava and Mansa, taking photos with the famous sculpture “The Hand”, walking along the yacht bay and watching the sea lions, as well as visiting the Casa Pueblo museum and gallery nearby.

Colonia del Sacramento is a historical gem of Uruguay. The city is known for its atmospheric historic district, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow cobblestone streets, colonial-style houses, the lighthouse overlooking the bay, and the cozy cafes make it a must-visit destination. The old town is a perfect place to stroll through, enjoying its quiet, almost Portuguese charm.
