The “Greek Ibiza” has an unfairly bad reputation: that’s why Zakynthos is underestimated

Zakynthos Island is located in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece.

Zakynthos has a reputation as a “party island”, a kind of “Greek Ibiza”. However, you shouldn’t rule out Zakynthos from your list of potential places to visit if you’re not interested in nightclubs, according to Vita Molyneux, a travel reporter for the British publication Express.

“Although Zakynthos certainly has a wild side, it’s not mandatory to participate. This is what I realized when I went to the island last week to celebrate a friend’s 30th birthday. At first, I was wary of the chosen location due to the stories I had heard, but I was greatly mistaken,” writes Molyneux.

She noted that the island’s nightlife is centered around the Laganas Strip. If this type of vacation is not for you, it is enough to simply avoid this particular place. Instead, you can choose a more peaceful area with villas in Vasilikos in the east of the island.

There you can enjoy a relaxing vacation surrounded by olive trees, mountains overlooking the warm sea, and traditional stone cottages. Instead of club music, you’ll hear only the singing of cicadas and the jingling of bells on the necks of domestic goats grazing nearby.

Vita Moliniere talks about a quiet beach holiday 20 minutes away from the cottage. The beach is organized, so there are sun loungers, a bar and even a swimming pool.

And of course, this was not the only good beach on the island. A 10-minute drive from Vasilikos is the famous Gerakas Beach, which is a protected marine reserve because it is a turtle nesting area. Despite its protected status, the beach is open to the public. You can even rent sun loungers, although there is no bar on the beach.

There are also many taverns in the Vasilikos area where you can eat and drink to your heart’s content “for a very reasonable price.”

“After four days in this paradise, I can safely say that I was wrong about Zakynthos. It may have a bad reputation, but the time spent there was extremely relaxing, full of delicious food, wonderful hospitality and beautiful scenery, ” concludes the tourist reviewer.
