These islands offer stunning views, beautiful beaches and an authentic Greek atmosphere.
The situation on one of the most famous Greek islands of Santorini remains unstable due to the threat of earthquakes, and perhaps tourists should consider alternative options this summer. At the same time, Greece is home to 6000 islands, among which it is quite possible to find a substitute for Santorini-with the same stunning views, white houses and beautiful beaches.
According to TravelOffPath, the National Geographic portal has compiled a list of more than three dozen Greek islands worth visiting this year – while Santorini did not even enter the top 15. Which three islands occupy the top lines of the list-find out later.
3. Kos
Kos, which combines history and peaceful beaches, is different from the partying Mykonos and more similar to the islands of Naxos and Paros, where there are almost no people.
Nat Geo has dubbed Kos “the island of bicycles” – here you can rent one of the 6,000 bicycles to ride on a variety of routes, including a new 8-mile route along the coast.
Here you can enjoy classic Greek food such as gyros, as well as moussaka, souvlaki and of course fresh seafood such as octopus and squid. Especially when you will be dining on the terrace overlooking the bright blue sea in places like Oliviti, hidden enough to feel authentic.
One of the best places to reach on two wheels is the ancient site of Asclepion, which costs only $ 4.50 to enter. Of course, this is not the Acropolis, but it offers a glimpse into the past of the famous Hippocrates, the “founder of medicine”.
In the island’s namesake town, you can stay in ancient hotels, or stay in the all-inclusive 5-star Mitsis Selection Blue Domes Hotel, which offers rooms ranging from bungalows to villas.
2. Kalymnos
It used to be a popular sponge diving destination, but now tourists are attracted to a new type of adventure: rock climbing.
Outdoor enthusiasts will definitely love the stunning limestone cliffs of Kalymnos, but even if you are inclined to spend a more relaxed time, the island is still an idyllic paradise with beautiful beaches, lively villages and an overall authentic Greek atmosphere.
Travelers are thrilled with Platis Gialos beach, as well as Vlihadia Beach with crystal clear waters located off the beaten track. Tourists are also delighted with the Monastery of St. Sava, which is located on a hillside and is free of charge.
Hotels on the island are very cheap, especially for small boutique hotels. For example, Kantouni Blue Sea has an impressive 4.9 rating on Google, and prices are around $ 50 in the spring.
1. Nishiros
Not many tourists have heard of this island. Nisyros claims to be an active volcano (it erupted in the 1800s), but is open to tourists.
According to Nat Geo, according to the island’s origin myths, “Poseidon grabbed a piece of Scythe and threw it at a fire titan named Polyvotis,” resulting in the formation of the island of Nisyros.
Mandraki, the capital of the island, is one of the most picturesque towns on all the Greek islands, with colorful houses, Byzantine churches and coastal taverns. Nat Geo also praises the tiny village of Emporios, which is stunning with its castle ruins, natural cave sauna, and arguably the best views of the volcano.
If you are planning to stay in Mandraki, then you will love the boutique Hotel Romantzo, for just $ 51 a night this spring and spacious balconies with sea views.
