The archipelago consists of more than 17,000 islands. Less than half of these territories are inhabited by people. The islands of Indonesia can be divided into two groups: named islands and unnamed islets. The latter attract wildlife researchers but are not suitable for tourist recreation.
The archipelago’s islands are located in two oceans: the Indian and the Pacific. Such a location undoubtedly attracts the attention of travelers. Tourists call the atmosphere of the archipelago its main highlight. The country has a fairly developed tourist infrastructure, always offering the possibility to rent property at affordable prices while enjoying European-level service.
Bali
If you have been to Bali before, you probably heard the legend that this island was initially created by the gods for their needs and entertainment. Later, either out of generosity or because they spent too much on its maintenance, they decided to open it to mere mortals. It is no surprise that travelers have to pay a substantial “tax” for the opportunity to spend an unforgettable vacation here.
The locals have long stopped paying attention to the strange nature and behavior of carefree tourists. Balinese people welcome everyone with a warm smile. If you’re looking for nightlife and dancing until dawn, head to Kuta. If you prefer luxurious vacations and first-class service, welcome to Nusa Dua. If you are traveling with your children for new experiences, choose Jimbaran.
Since Bali has only two seasons—wet and dry—we recommend planning your vacation during the most comfortable period, from April to September. Even those who arrive from October to March can’t hide their delight. Keep in mind that the southern beaches during the rainy season are not as clean due to plastic “surprises” brought by the currents. Of course, the north and west can’t boast white sand, as it is mostly black, but there are exceptions if you look hard enough.
The most popular activities on the island are surfing, diving, and rafting. Surfing enthusiasts prefer the south and east of the island. You can also rent equipment and take lessons here. If this is your sole purpose of travel, consider purchasing a “Stay + Surf” package to save money on your hobby.
Diving enthusiasts head to the east and west of the island, to the Barat National Park, where the reefs are simply breathtaking. Rafting fans won’t miss the chance to raft down the Ayung and Telaga Waja rivers. Such adventures are best during the rainy season, guaranteeing you an “Arrr!” and “Why did I need this? I should have stayed home.”
You will also encounter people passionate about kitesurfing and windsurfing, especially at the Sanur resort. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of participating in a cycling tour, fishing, kayaking, underwater walking, or elephant riding. For those craving something unique, consider canyoning, volcano climbing, and organized cave tours.
As you can see, Bali is indeed a unique island where dreams come true.
Java
The world’s most densely populated island appeared on the planet’s map thanks to volcanic activity. Java is literally made of mountains. However, this doesn’t hinder the development of agriculture here, as locals grow organic vegetables and fruits and produce the world’s most expensive coffee: Kopi Luwak.
Java is rich in historical monuments and is a true treasure trove for archaeologists. The island has numerous religious structures. The temples of Java are as iconic as its museums, luxurious hotels, and parks. The best time to visit is from May to September.
History enthusiasts should consider staying in the state’s capital, Jakarta. It houses a complex of unique Hindu temples, museums alongside national quarters, ancient structures, and romantic retreat spots.
Lombok
Lombok seems specially created for tourists who want to immerse themselves in a world of silence and tranquility, far from civilization. It captivates with its stunning lakes and waterfalls. Here, you will find the harmony so often missing in the daily bustle and worries.
You can’t help but admire the beauty of the tropical island. Endless beaches, soft white sand, shady palm trees, and majestic mountains help restore inner balance. A vacation here becomes a dream for anyone who loves spending time alone with nature. Nearby are many small coral islands, most of which are uninhabited.
The best time to visit Lombok is from May to September. The weather will be favorable for a vacation during this period. There’s no need to worry about heavy rains disrupting plans to hike in the mountains or relax on the beach. Of course, weather “surprises” can happen but are very rare. When planning your trip, consider that temperature and humidity levels can vary significantly in different parts of the island. So, focus on the specific region’s weather conditions.
Those who don’t like idle time will enjoy Lombok. Don’t limit yourself to the pleasures of a beach vacation. The island is so unique, fascinating, and not yet overrun by tourists that it sparks great interest among most visitors.
During the tourist season (May to October), you can climb one of Indonesia’s highest volcanoes, Rinjani. This adventure is not for everyone: conquering the summit takes at least a day. Trekking tours are organized everywhere, led by guides.
You can also use the services of a helpful porter. The climb is worth the time and money spent. The views from the summit are breathtaking. And when else will you get the chance to look into a real volcanic crater? Narmada Water Park is a place for seekers of the elixir of life.
Water is represented in various forms here: clear lakes, fountains, and a pool will give you new energy. Life-giving streams cascade down a high mountain, filling and renewing natural reservoirs. The “Fountain of Youth” is known for its healing properties. Washing under its streams will ensure your facial skin stays in good condition.
In the village of Sukarara, skilled weavers still live. Watching them create incredible textiles by hand is a pure pleasure.
Nusa Penida
Located near the better-known Indonesian island of Bali, its smaller neighbor consists of three plateaus at different heights. Nusa Penida is part of a bird sanctuary. Many tourists come here specifically to see and listen to the birds, whose singing (along with the ocean waves’ sound) soothes nerves, helps relieve stress, and promotes positivity. It’s hotter here than on Bali, and the island’s tourist infrastructure is less developed. However, Nusa Penida is perfect for a break from city life’s hustle and bustle.
The island is known for its beautiful nature. It has numerous underground and underwater caves. Nusa Penida has long been the primary location for several well-known dive centers. Additionally, year-round excellent fishing is available, and you can always see live giant manta rays.
The small island has many observation decks. The scattered beaches, including wild ones, are very cozy. The most famous attraction on the island is the Goa Giri Putri temple. This temple complex occupies a vast natural cave with holy healing springs.
Gili Meno
This quiet island is close to Lombok and Bali. Gili Meno is all about tranquility. Therefore, it is not a place for fun lovers. But honeymooners, elderly people, and those tired of the hectic city life will appreciate the island’s peaceful atmosphere.
To fully enjoy the beach vacation on Gili Meno, it’s best to travel from May to October. Rains begin in November and sometimes turn into heavy showers.
High humidity makes the heat harder for tourists to bear. However, the “wet season” is not a barrier for tourists. Most rain falls during the winter months. At other times, there are noticeable breaks between showers. If it starts raining, the pool will become your best friend at any time.
This island is remarkable for its “doing nothing.” Everything that can diversify a beach vacation is absent here. So, prepare to spend your days gazing at the serene water or enjoying the local views, or lounging in a hotel. The only available “entertainments” are bicycle rides and horseback riding.
Occasionally, boredom is alleviated by sitting in local cafes, offering impressive views of the blue waves and passing boats. Overall, a vacation on Gili Meno will be quiet and serene, bringing harmony and making you feel part of untouched nature.
Gili Trawangan
It is the longest and most lively of the Gili Islands. Endless cafes line the waterfront. This island doesn’t give the impression of isolation from everything earthly. It’s noisy, and there are many ongoing constructions that spoil the “picture.” However, if you move a few meters away from the beach towards the island’s center, you can find plenty of accommodation where you won’t hear loud noises and laughter.
The best time to visit is the same as Gili Meno. These tropical Indonesian islands are neighbors, so their weather conditions are similar. The period from May to October is the “golden time” to visit the island.
There are relatively few activities on Gili Trawangan, despite it not being an isolation island. There is no transport here, which many tourists find delightful. Bicycles and horses are used for transportation. Trawangan is a great place for snorkeling. To make snorkeling more than just observing marine life, study the local marine species beforehand. Snorkeling becomes much more interesting, especially for beginners.
For those who love sitting by the sea, cafes offer a place to “party hard.” Relax and dream at sunset, each of which on Gili Trawangan is stunningly unique. To capture a sunset that you may never see again in your life, don’t forget your camera.
Nusa Lembongan
Located near Bali, it’s a half-hour boat ride away. Nusa Lembongan is different from its well-known neighbor. The water is emerald, not sky-blue. This piece of land has two large beaches and some smaller, less visited ones.
The best season is from April to the end of September. Like all Indonesian islands, Nusa Lembongan has two seasons. The “non-tourist” season is characterized by heavy rainfall.
The best activities are surfing, diving, and snorkeling. The island’s beaches are relatively accessible. You can walk from one rest spot to another. The beaches have unique features worth seeing to get a complete impression of this tropical island.
Komodo
This territory is part of the Komodo National Park. The island is usually chosen by tourists who dream of seeing natural beauty and wonders. Giant monitor lizards, known as Komodo dragons, live here. These lizards are top predators. In the wild, they are aggressive and can attack humans.
To address this issue and allow tourists to enjoy watching the three-meter lizards, local authorities feed the Komodo dragons and provide armed rangers to accompany tourist groups.
On Komodo, you can also see enormous rounded hills. They look simply fantastic at sunrise and sunset! This is one of the few places in the world where a harmonious balance between wild nature and human activity is still maintained. The local fishing villages have a very friendly atmosphere. In the island’s settlements, Muslims, Hindus, and Christians live together harmoniously.
Komodo is ideal for walking enthusiasts and diving with scuba gear. Food lovers and supporters of healthy eating also adore visiting this island, as seafood is prepared using traditional recipes here, preserving the maximum nutrients.
Mentawai Islands
The Mentawai Islands are wild and underdeveloped. Local residents were isolated from the rest of the world’s population until the 19th century. Seventy small islands are still not particularly visited by tourists. Life on the Mentawai Islands flows leisurely. There are no youth parties, familiar restaurants, or luxurious hotels found at every popular resort.
The charm of the Mentawai Islands lies in their isolation. Reaching them is not easy, but believe me, the journey is worth it. Arriving in the Mentawai, the childhood dream of becoming Robinson Crusoe for a day comes true. Those who ate the famous paradise chocolate with palm trees and blue waves on the wrapper surely dreamed of visiting this “fairy tale.”
The best time to visit the islands is from May to June or September to October. During these periods, the climate is most favorable for a vacation. The weather is relatively stable. At other times, some unpleasant conditions may significantly impact your impression of the Mentawai Islands.
Surfers from many countries love coming to the islands. The conditions for surfing here are the best. Almost all thematic video clips are filmed right here. The waves are suitable for both professionals and beginners. Plus, there’s a high chance that no one will interfere with conquering the water heights. A simple walk around the island will seem exciting. There are many amazing animals and unseen plants here.
Diving won’t interfere with the vacation: the fish are perfectly visible in the clear water. Fishing will bring pleasure even from the process itself, not to mention the catch. Sitting with a fishing rod in the middle of the blue sea and looking at the horizon line stretching into the distance will delight every avid fisherman. Tribes still live on the Mentawai Islands. They are worth seeing. You don’t meet people far from civilization every day. Their lifestyle and customs will surprise any seasoned traveler.
When traveling to a group of Indonesian islands, don’t forget to bring mosquito repellents. It’s better to take mosquito nets and protective sprays or creams. To ensure a smooth trip without unpleasant surprises, don’t rely on luck.
Sulawesi
Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s largest islands. It consists of four peninsulas separated by bays. The legendary Lake Matano is located here. Mystics consider it one of the planet’s most powerful places of strength. An annual sports festival is held in Sulawesi in honor of this unique natural object.
Many tourists and locals believe giants once lived on the island. The fabulous hypothesis has a logical explanation because amazing megaliths over 4 meters high are located in different parts of Sulawesi. They outwardly resemble figures of children’s dolls, repeating the shapes of kitchen pots and other utensils.
Tourists come to Sulawesi specifically to see ancient rock art monuments: drawings of animals, hunting scenes, flowers, and primitive star maps. Over 100 ethnic groups live in this part of Indonesia today, making its culture an incredible mix of various beliefs, traditions, and customs.
Thrill-seekers always try to visit the Toraja tribe during their Sulawesi trip. Paganism became an officially recognized religion in the state thanks to them. The Toraja don’t worship gods but fanatically honor deceased ancestors. The tribe actively practices necromancy, spiritualism, and mediumship.
Flores
Flores is also home to predatory Komodo dragons. In terms of population, the island resembles a metropolis. However, this doesn’t prevent humans and wildlife from living side by side. Travelers come to Flores specifically to admire tropical forests and volcanoes.
Many of the volcanoes are active, so the risk of eruptions is high. Other notable attractions on the island include crater lakes that regularly change color and wild beaches. This place is full of mysteries and wonders that modern science cannot explain.
700,000 years ago, hobbits lived here. Yes, we are talking about those very dwarf creatures that resemble humans! They hunted, gathered, and could make primitive tools. Gourmet tourists find Flores interesting because coffee and various rice varieties are grown here, and locals prepare dishes using recipes over 1,000 years old.
Another highlight of the area is a cozy beach with the cleanest pink sand. The sand has a tasty hue, like the froth of strawberry jam. The most popular activities among tourists on the island include diving, sea walks, visiting rice fields, and hot springs.
The hot springs have enormous pools filled with hot and cold water. Mother nature created these pools for therapeutic baths.
Sumatra
This vast island is divided by the equator, so visiting it allows you to experience both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. Earthquakes are frequent on Sumatra, but this doesn’t deter travelers eager to visit one of the planet’s most beautiful places.
Lake Toba, formed in a giant volcanic caldera, is located here. The island’s nature is picturesque. Its animal and plant life is diverse. Rhinos, tigers, leopards, buffalo, macaques, crocodiles, and large snakes live here.
Ancient Sumatran states were considered very powerful by historians. They had unique shipbuilding, stone and wood processing, and agriculture technologies. Brick Buddhist temples and fragments of defensive structures built in those legendary times still stand on the island, allowing long sieges.
Sumatra is divided into provinces and separate islands surrounding the main island. Elite tea, coffee, and spices are grown everywhere. Travelers happily buy these goods and take them to different parts of the world. Local guided tours to the sultan’s and king’s palaces are also trendy among tourists.
Interestingly, traditional local tribe settlements (villages) can also be seen on the island, where everyday items are still made entirely by hand.
Borneo
Interestingly, Borneo belongs to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Borneo has inspired many famous writers and even scientists. Ancient tropical forests, impenetrable jungles, and endless mountains can inspire even the most discerning traveler.
Rain can fall on the island at any time. Usually, rainfall occurs at night and is short-lived (to the great relief of tourists). Autumn rains are prolonged. They start to end by late January. Russians visit Borneo even in unfavorable climatic conditions because the island is worth hosting guests constantly.
The island’s size has allowed it to house dozens of unique attractions. The ethnographic museum, climbing Kinabalu, meeting the natives, reserves, and a turtle farm are just a few things to see. In Gunung Mulu Park, a ropeway hanging from trees will beckon you. A walk on it can compare to the most thrilling rides. The daring pedestrians will see breathtaking landscapes from the height.
