Named a charming Spanish town, where tourists are very welcome

Local authorities have invested heavily in beautifying the city. Now there is something to do and interesting to spend your vacation.

The tiny Andalusian town of Comares has found a happy balance between locals and tourists.

Former resident Mark Jones said that he is located an hour’s drive from Malaga in a mountainous area called Acharquia, which is not very well known among tourists, writes The Independent. The publication noted that the population in the town has significantly decreased and aged, so it still needs tourists to thrive.

Local authorities have invested heavily in beautifying the city. Concrete or dirt paths were replaced with cobblestones. The ceramic cooperative has produced attractive explanatory signs that tell the story of the town since its inception as an Arab fortress. They made dozens of new parking spaces under the town. And, as Jones noted, for several years in a row, they remained empty.

In general, as Jones said, this is a quiet town, but the center of Comares is bustling with life – the main square is noisy-voices, music, the clatter of glasses and plates.

“The main square is crowded. Waiters serving coffee, beer, salads and plates of fried fish run back and forth between La Plaza Bar and the nearby Robert’s restaurant. The courtyard of the Hotel Verde Olivia also does good things, ” the article says.

On the observation deck, visitors come together to admire the views of the coast and the majestic outline of the local mountain La Maroma.

Also in the town you can see groups of climbers. A zipline runs through the mountains, and Comares is quickly becoming a rock climbing magnet. There will also be incredible hiking and cycling opportunities, as well as local souvenir shops that will delight shoppers. And now, Jones noted, there was nowhere to park in the parking lots near the town.

“A quieter, more civilized and friendly form of rural tourism is taking root in the mountains,” Jones says, adding that unlike in previous years, you will definitely get overnight accommodation and good food, and (also unlike in previous years) you’d better book your room in advance.

The best hotel and restaurant in Comares is the Verde Olivia in the square. You’ll also find decent food at Roberts and Mirador de la Axarquia.
