Mestia, Svaneti – a unique corner in the mountains of Georgia

Mestia (Georgia) is a colorful and somewhat mysterious settlement in the mountainous region of the country. This part of Georgia is known for its amazing architectural structures and is called “The Land of a Thousand Towers”. For thousands of years, local Svans built tall structures-towers of a quadrangular shape, and such buildings were assigned economic and defensive tasks. In addition to the towers, Svaneti attracts tourists with its picturesque landscapes, architectural sights, and ancient churches. The architecture of the settlement is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The region has long been considered the guardian of Georgian treasures collected and displayed as exhibits in the Museum of History and Ethnography.

General information

Mestia (Svaneti) is located in the southern part of the Greater Caucasus at a distance of 128 km from the administrative center of Zugdidi (in a north-easterly direction). The settlement is located at an altitude of 1.5 km. Local residents-Svans-are an ethnic group that is distinguished by masculinity, special culture and centuries-old traditions.

Interesting fact! Svan culture and traditions have been known for 4 thousand years.

Mestia in winter

The special flavor and identity of the Svans were formed for many millennia. The mountain dwellers led a separate way of life, because in winter the passes in the mountains were covered with snow, and Svaneti was cut off from the rest of the world. As a result of this isolation, the region was never invaded by invaders.

It is important! Svaneti has retained its inaccessibility – the paved highway is laid to Mestia, the capital of the region, then you need to move exclusively on dirt roads. Travel to the villages in the mountains is better by taxi.

Small streets in Mestia

In Svaneti, Georgia is represented in a concentrated form. The small territory contains all the distinctive features of the country-picturesque mountains, centuries-old legends, amazing lamb with tkemali sauce, the best honey in the whole world and, of course, harsh and laconic svans.

Interesting to know! The main enemy of Svaneti is litsvri. This is a custom of blood feud, which in the highlands has acquired special significance. According to historical data, over 5 centuries, more than two hundred Georgian families died as a result of blood feuds. The famous Svan towers were built primarily to protect against attacks by local residents.

City Hall and Police building

Mestia makes an impression on tourists who come to Georgia. There are neat houses decorated in Alpine style, the city Hall, built in a modern style, an inconspicuous police building, the House of Justice, temples and monuments.

The historical center of Mestia is the only place in the settlement that has not been restored. Externally, it looked like this-a bit of old Tallinn, mountain landscapes, cobbled streets and a dozen Svan towers.

What to see and where to go

Museum of History and Ethnography in Svaneti

The attraction was founded in 1936, the total number of exhibits totals 4 thousand. The main exhibition is located on the second floor, in the halls arranged in a ring. On the ground floor there is only one hall dedicated to ethnography.

The house-museum is organized in the family nest where the boy was born. His father, also a mountaineer, conquered Ushba in 1932. In the main room where the boy was born, the environment created by his parents was preserved — a hearth, a lamp, a large table and cradle, family photos on the walls. Love for mountain peaks was instilled in the boy from birth, because all the men in the family were fond of mountaineering-father, uncle, cousin.

In 1951, Khergiani graduated from the school of mountaineering instructors, and a year later he got a job at a mountaineering camp in the Elbrus region. After 5 years, Mikhail works as the head of a rescue team in a camp located in the Shkhelda gorge. Since 1952, the athlete’s career has been actively developing.

The great mountaineer died in 1969, at the age of 37, after falling from a height of 600 meters in the Italian Dolomites. The rope that insured Mikhail is displayed in the museum and is kept under the roof. Works by Yuri Vizbor, Vladimir Vysotsky, and Yevgeny Yevtushenko were dedicated to the great mountaineer.
