Koh Kut Travel Guide: Thailand’s Hidden Island Paradise

In the south of Thailand, you can find an island for any type of holiday. So, lovers of beach discos, noisy parties and active nightlife choose Phuket. For a more peaceful environment and sparsely populated beaches, go to Koh Samui. Those who are looking for a break from civilization, but are not averse to dancing on the seashore before dawn once a month, sail to Phangan. And why go to the island Koh Kut?

Where is Ko Kut located

The small island of Koh Kut (or Kood), the last of the group of islands of Mu Koh Chang, is located in the south-east of Thailand, near the border with Cambodia. Such remoteness from the center has led to the fact that the island is not yet particularly inhabited by tourists, and there are almost no locals on it, only the population of a couple of fishing villages and hotel staff.

How to get there and when is the best time to go to Koh Kut

If you are flying to Bangkok, Koh Kut can be reached by ferry from Trat City. The bus from the capital of Thailand to Trat takes 5 hours, costs about 8 euros and departs from the Northern Bus Station (New Morchid) or from the Ekami bus terminal. You will need the Laem Sok pier at the end of the Trip.

Ferries to Koh Kut also run from the neighboring islands of Koh Chang and Koh Mak.

If you prefer air transport to all types of transport, then you can’t avoid the ferry anyway, since there is no airport on Koh Kuta, and the nearest one is still in the same waste.

The most comfortable holiday season in Koh Kuta is from November to March. At this time of year, southern Thailand is warm, with occasional pleasant, refreshing rains. This season is called high, and prices, accordingly, are also the highest. In March, the dry season begins, which lasts until the end of May. This is the hottest time, and it may not rain once in all three months. The rainy season is from June to October. At this time, almost every day, the sky breaks with showers, but they usually last an hour or two. During the rainy season, the island has the fewest people and the lowest prices. A great way to relax economically, and you can wait out the rain in a cafe.

Why go to Koh Kut

Koh Kut attracts tourists primarily for its wildness. There are no package tours, there are no multi-storey hotels of international chains, and on the beach you are not attacked by travel agents with offers of all kinds of entertainment. At the same time, you will not be left without the benefits of civilization, there are cozy bungalows on the shore, and you can rent a moped to move around the island.

There are no attractions on Koh Kut. But there are many almost deserted and very clean beaches, several waterfalls and the fishing village of Ao Yai. You can spend hours lying on the sand, dipping into cool water to cool off. You can enjoy fresh fish at the cafe with a view of the surf. You can buy or rent snorkeling or mooring equipment and explore the underwater world around Koh Kut. Paddle boarders can take a kayak up the Khlong Jao River to the waterfall, splash in the backwaters below, and swim back.

Klong Chao Waterfalls

By the way, if you do not just rent a kayak on Koh Kut, but also use the services of a guide, you can get an unforgettable experience of traveling through small rivers, lakes and mangroves. In the dark, there is a considerable chance to see fireflies, sometimes in such numbers that it seems as if the jungle itself glows.

Klong Jao

In the virgin forests of Koh Kut, there are several particularly old and large trees that can be reached by walking paths from dirt roads. Don’t be afraid to get lost, there are signposts marked Makayuk-Saiyai all along the way.

Koh Kut beaches and hotels

Koh Kut’s central beach is called Klong Chao, and it is where most cafes, hotels, and equipment rental agencies are located. Naturally, there are also the most people here, but given the overall sparseness of the island, this does not mean that you will not find a free place. Not far from the beach there is the main natural highlight of Koh Kut waterfall.

Klong Jao beach

The beaches in the south of the island, Ao Jak, Ao Phrao and Khlong Hin, are often visited by excursions, so they are occasionally noisy.

The beach in Bang Bao Bay is ideal for families with children, there are no waves on it, and the perfectly clear water makes it a paradise for snorkeling fans.

Near the village of Klong Mat in the west of the island, there is Taphao Beach, where you can arrange an unforgettable romantic date. It is framed by shady palm trees, so you won’t need an umbrella, and the sunsets are fantastic.

The small beaches of Koh Kut, Ao Noi, Yai Ki, Maphut are worth looking for privacy. By the way, “ao” is translated from Thai as “bay”.

All hotels in Koh Kuta are located on the first line, that is, right by the sea, so the soothing sound of the surf around the clock is guaranteed to you. Budget accommodation options occupy the western coast of the island, while the most expensive ones occupy the eastern coast.

Features of Koh Kut Island

There is no public transport on the island. Hotels offer their guests a shuttle service to and from the marina, but no more. There are only three options for moving around the island. The first one is on foot, economical and convenient for short distances. The second one is on a bicycle, suitable for people with good physical fitness, as the terrain of Koh Kuta is very hilly. The third and most popular scooter or, as it is also called, motobike. You can rent an iron horse in any hotel, it will cost you about 7-8 euros per day, the rights are not asked. The main thing is not to accelerate too much, do not get behind the wheel while drunk and always wear a helmet.

Hearth Islands

There are no banks or ATMs in Koh Kut either, and just a couple of hotels accept bank cards. So you can withdraw Thai baht in advance (for example, in Bangkok) or exchange dollars or euros.

Ao Salad harbor

Because of its remoteness, Koh Kut is the most expensive of Thailand’s islands. Prices here are on average one and a half times higher than in popular resorts.

Koh Kut Island is a paradise in Thailand, an ideal place for those who seek peace and quiet surrounded by unspoilt nature. Getting to it is more difficult than to the more popular resorts in the country, but for all your efforts you will be rewarded with a truly unforgettable vacation.
