May is basically the last opportunity to relax in popular European cities before the sweltering heat and the arrival of crowds of tourists.
Experts of The Independent edition named eight wonderful tourist destinations in Europe, where it is warm and sunny in May.
1. Gozo, Malta (the average temperature in May is +24C, the number of sunny hours per day is 9). The Maltese island of Gozo offers a more relaxed pace of rest than the mainland, which is only 45 minutes away by ferry. Here you can enjoy beautiful Mediterranean views, local cuisine and rural hiking trails. Gozo is only 67 square kilometers in size, but there are 15 bus routes offering a tourist network all over the island. In its capital, Rabat (or Victoria, as it is also called), you can find a medieval citadel, which houses the historic Gran Castello House, the Gozo Archeology Museum and the Gozo Cathedral.
2. Seville, Spain (the average temperature in May is +26C, the number of sunny hours per day is 8). The capital of Andalusia boasts an array of architectural structures, from modern buildings to historical monuments, including the 16th-century Gothic Seville Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the time of the Moors.
3. Thessaloniki, Greece (the average temperature in May is +25C, the number of sunny hours per day is 8). If you are looking for sea views and a cultural city break, this is the perfect place to visit. The White Tower of Thessaloniki is located on the waterfront, and historical landmarks also include the 4th-century Galerius Arch and Rotunda, while the walls of Thessaloniki surrounding the city were built in the Middle Ages. Meanwhile, Egnatia’s main street, with its shops, restaurants and bars, is bustling with nightlife.
4. Bodrum, Turkey (average temperature in May +27C, number of sunny hours per day – 11). Located on the southwestern coast of the country, this peninsula overlooks the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, making it an ideal place for a beach holiday in May. 5. Formentera, Spain (the average temperature in May is +24C, the number of sunny hours per day is 9). The smallest of the Balearic Islands is located southeast of Ibiza and is a quieter, less crowded holiday destination. It has spectacular beaches and turquoise waters, as well as several towns and resorts to explore, including La Savina, Es Midjorn, Cala Saona, Es Pujols, and El Pilar de la Mola. Formentera can be reached by ferry, and it is worth knowing that the number of vehicles is limited in the summer to protect this picturesque island.
6. Sorrento, Italy (average temperature in May +26C, number of sunny hours per day – 8). This historic city is located on a peninsula offering visitors stunning views of the Bay of Naples. Meanwhile, May is the perfect time to see the orange and lemon trees blooming here. In addition, the city usually has fewer visitors at this time than during the peak summer months.
7. Protaras, Cyprus (average temperature in May +26C, number of sunny hours per day – 10). This resort town in eastern Cyprus offers magnificent beaches where you can lie on a sun lounger or take a scenic walk along the coast. Meanwhile, Fig Tree Bay is the most famous coastal spot for bars, restaurants and nightlife. Additionally, the famous party town of Ayia Napa is just a 15-minute drive away.
8. Cascais, Portugal (average temperature in May +23C, number of sunny hours per day – 9). Just 40 minutes from the capital Lisbon, this city offers cultural attractions such as the 19th-century stately Casa de Santa Maria and the Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum. Outdoor activities include hiking trails, kayaking, paddle boarding and paragliding, and Cascais is famous for its many golf courses.
