“European Hawaii”: named islands in Portugal that attract with their beauty

The volcanic nature of these islands captures and creates an incredible landscape.

A vacation in the Caribbean can seem like a great option, especially when it gets cooler and the days get shorter. However, for such a holiday, there is a European alternative that offers all the advantages of traveling around the islands for less money, writes Express.

In particular, experts advise tourists to visit the Azores, an archipelago in Portugal, which is often called “European Hawaii”.

The archipelago consists of 9 large islands – San Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Graciosa, San Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo. It is noted that each of them is special in its own way.

The Azores are also a treasure trove for scientists, as their volcanic nature creates an impressive landscape that shapes life on them.

If you visit San Miguel, you will take a dip in the incredible thermal pools, where geothermal heat is used to make the traditional Azorean stew “cozido dos Acores” in the Furnas area. This delicacy is first hidden in the ground for seven hours, until the vegetables and meat become hot.

Moreover, the Azores have been ranked as one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Although the peak season runs from April to October, the chances of seeing migrating whale species increase in late April and early May.

“To reach your destination, you need to fly to San Miguel, the largest of the nine islands. From there, you can fly to other islands or even take a ferry between them, enjoying the spectacular ocean scenery. However, it is important to note that since these islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, weather conditions can lead to delays-especially if you are planning a trip during the winter months, ” Express added.
