This region has stunning landscapes and many attractions.
Tourist Janine Barone has visited Portugal more than a dozen times, both the mainland and the islands. She has traveled at different times of the year, visiting both large cities and small villages, but one region of the country has captured her heart.
As Barone told Business Insider in an article, she recommends visiting the Alentejo region, Portugal’s largest province, which stretches from the Atlantic coast to the border with Spain. She recommended the best sights in the region, which she goes back to again and again.
Lake Alqueva
This is the largest artificial lake in Western Europe, and there are plenty of activities to do nearby.
“The picturesque Amieira River beach is perfect for sunbathing, whether on the sand or on the adjacent grassy lawns. Kayaks can be rented at the nearby Amieira Marina, which overlooks the Alqueva,” she says.
Moura
A small town with charming narrow streets and whitewashed houses, located south of Lake Alqueva.
“I absolutely love walking along the narrow streets lined with low, whitewashed houses, many of which are adorned with colorful flower pots. However, in my opinion, the best part of this city is Jardim Doutor Santiago, a peaceful garden located near a historic castle. The main attraction is the stunning view of the vast surrounding agricultural lands, dotted with olive trees, and you can even make out the Alqueva Dam in the distance,” she says.
Quinta do Quetzal
A magnificent estate with a restaurant, an art center, and views of the vineyards.
“Whenever I want to enjoy a combination of unique art, delicious food, and high-quality wine, I go to Quinta do Quetzal, which is home to an art center and a restaurant. The spacious restaurant offers an incredible view of the neat rows of grapevines… It’s a true feast for the senses,” writes Barone.
Beaches of Comporta
She notes that the region of Erradí da Comporta is especially beautiful in spring or early autumn, when the temperatures are mild and there are fewer people on the beaches. Comporta consists of seven villages, each with its own unique charm.
Buizinhos Beach in Porto Covos
“Porto Covo has several beautiful, peaceful beaches, but my favorite is Buizinho, which is located right at the beginning of the trail. I can’t imagine a better way to end a day of adventure than by relaxing and enjoying the crystal-clear water and salty air,” Barone shares.
