In Maribor, ancient vineyards meet modern wine bars.
Although countries such as France or Italy are primarily associated with wine, in 2026, the unexpected destination of Maribor, the second-largest city in Slovenia, was recognized as the European Wine Capital.
How the winner was determined
To determine the best wine destination in Europe in 2026, experts from the travel portal European Best Destinations analyzed more than 120 recognized wine regions in Europe.
To determine the winner, they evaluated them based on 26 selection criteria, including heritage, reputation, diversity, infrastructure, price/quality ratio, and the entire wine tourism ecosystem, from production to visitor experiences.
Why is Maribor the 2026 European Wine Capital?
Located in the heart of Slovenia’s largest wine-growing region, this riverfront city combines deep-rooted traditions with a young, creative energy. It’s a place where ancient vineyards meet modern wine bars, and where every street seems to be connected to the rhythm of harvest, according to the authors of the ranking.
Meanwhile, in the center of the city, there is a world icon: the world’s oldest noble vine, which is over 450 years old and still produces fruit.
“This is more than just a Guinness World Record-it is a symbol of the city’s resilience, skill and continuity. Just a few steps away is Vinag, one of Europe’s largest historic underground wine cellars, which stretches under the old town like a forgotten maze, offering tastings that are both atmospheric and authentic,” the experts argue for their choice.
It is noted that Maribor produces some of the most expressive white wines in Europe: Shipon (Furmint), Laski Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Traminer, as well as more elegant sparkling wines.
“The wine culture here is not an accessory, but an identity. From the celebration of St. Martin’s Day to the election of the Wine Queen of Maribor, traditions are deeply rooted, linking Roman roots with modern innovations. The sound of the klopotets, the region’s iconic wooden rattle that guards the vineyards, fills the hills every autumn during harvest.”
