No car, but a 24-hour pub: an island in Britain that impresses with its atmosphere

The island is almost 5 kilometers long.

In a world filled with technology and bustling cities, it can be challenging to find a peaceful place. However, Lundy Island, located off the coast of North Devon in the Bristol Channel, is just such a place. This is reported by Daily Mail.

The island, which is almost five kilometers long, is home to many wild animals, including the Atlantic puffin, which outnumber the population by a factor of 15.

It is known that the island is not allowed to have cars, so you can visit it as part of a day trip on the regular MS Oldenburg ferry from April to October. The journey usually takes two hours from Bideford to Ilfracombe.

The only way to get to the island in winter is by helicopter.

“The island is not connected to the national grid, but is powered by a generator that turns off at midnight every day. There are no cars on Landi, and although the island is small, there is much to see and explore, particularly the island’s only pub, Marisco Tavern, where mobile phones are strictly prohibited. Anyone who violates this rule must pay 1 pound ” the article says.

It is noted that the pub has a license to sell alcohol and is the only building on the island that is illuminated at night. The menu of Marisco Tavern sometimes includes dishes that are made with local ingredients, such as lamb from Lundy.

Visitors who want to explore the area can visit the 13th-century castle and the Old Lighthouse.

“There are many places along the coast where you can watch seals and other wildlife. Landi Island has a population of about 28, and travelers can join this small community for a short time and stay in one of the 23 self-catering accommodations. The island also has a campsite and a small shop where you can buy the most necessary things, ” the Daily Mail says.

If you need to make a phone call during your trip, you can use the payphone at the Marisco Tavern, as mobile phone service is often unreliable.

High-speed internet was introduced on Lundy only two years ago, in 2023.
