Portuguese resident shares her tips on choosing the perfect island in the Azores

There are nine inhabited islands in the Azores, and they are all very different.

The Azores is a remote archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, which is an autonomous region of Portugal and is often referred to as a paradise between Europe and Africa.

In total, the Azores have nine inhabited islands, so choosing the one that best suits your interests and needs is quite a challenge. Portuguese resident Sandra Henriques, who was born in the Azores and now lives in the capital Lisbon, in her article on Lonely Planet, tried to make it easier for tourists going there on vacation.

“As a native of the Azores, currently living in Lisbon, I love helping people discover the beauty and culture of the islands. Known for its hiking trails and lagoons, dormant volcanoes, and whale watching, the Azores naturally attracts outdoor enthusiasts. However, these islands are also rich in unique cuisine, exceptional wines, vibrant cultural events, and traditional celebrations,” she says.

According to her, the Azores continue to gain popularity as a tourist destination, but some islands remain out of sight for most people.

At the same time, she stressed that the landscapes in the archipelago change from island to island, so the principle of “saw one, saw them all” does not apply here.

Which of the Azores is the best place to visit?

  1. San Miguel is the best for entertainment.
  2. Graciosa is the best place to visit with your family.
  3. Santa Maria is the best for summer festivals.
  4. Korvu is the best for relaxation.
  5. Terceira is the best for culture.
  6. San Jorge is the best for hiking.
  7. Piku is the best for exploring local heritage.
  8. Fayal is the best for a beach holiday.
  9. Flores is the best place to see untouched nature.
